From Tehran to Paris in 70 minutes. Jamshid Jam, the duo comprised of artists and composers Jean-François Charles and Ramin Roshandel, will join the core ensemble in a program of newly commissioned music. This eclectic quartet of clarinet, violin, cello, and setar will perform a work composed by each guest artist. Roshandel has written Coping Mechanisms, an homage to the great Persian musical traditions and the struggle between good and evil. Charles’ The Blues and the Material Truth includes five separate blues inspired by everything from an alpine flower to the hunchback of Notre Dame. Don’t miss this powerful partnership!

We’re feeling nostalgic. After three years of duo programs featuring brand new compositions inspired by folk music from around the world, the core ensemble brings you this program of old and new favorites. The program opener, Red Cedar Express by Michael Kimber, was the very first commission and world premiere by Miera and Carey after becoming directors in 2016. We look forward to bringing new-to-our-audience works by Anton Stamitz and Francesco Barsanti and will also return to Zoltán Kodály’s Duo for Violin and Cello, Op. 7, an impressive work that bridges the gap between Hungarian folk music and the European art music tradition.

We regret that violist Choong-Jin Chang will not be able to join us for this program, as he is recovering from a major medical issue.
Join us for program of string trio music. We’ll perform Bach’s Sonata in G minor for Viola da Gamba and Harpsichord Obligato, which features the viola as soloist, with the violin and cello taking the right and left hands of the harpsichord part. Also on the program is the String Trio by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco as well as two works by living composers. Costa Rican clarinetist and composer Vinicio Meza has captured the Latin American style with his Suite latinoamericana. In four parts, it includes a tango, a waltz and two choro (one slow and one fast). We also commissioned our friend, Iowa City violist and composer Brian Lenth, to write a work for this concert. His new piece, again and again and again, is a rhythmically driving work that will leave the audience (and performers) breathless.
